There is something special about the nature of IWIF employees
You can see it in their eyes; hear it in their conversations; feel it in their actions. It is their unyielding commitment to the community in which they live.
When employees join IWIF, they know they are part of a caring organization. For us, the term “Local Focus” means more than being a local company serving a local marketplace; it also means that we, as residents and neighbors, are focused on serving our local communities. Our involvement with the community allows us to give back to those who make it possible for us to be here in the first place.
I am proud of the work IWIF employees do, both in the marketplace and the community. Most of all, I’m proud to share with you examples of how IWIF and its employees are making Maryland a better place to live and work.
–Tom Phelan, IWIF President and CEO
Making Maryland a Better Place to Live and Work

Turning good intentions into good deeds
At the center of our efforts is the IWIF & YOU Charitable Contributions Program. This program includes a number of components that allow employees to reach out to their favorite charities in several ways. They include such efforts as: grants, matching donations, collections, and volunteer hours. Overseeing these efforts are IWIF’s board of directors, executive management team, and a four-employee volunteer committee. Their goals are to ensure charitable funds and support remain consistent with the company’s values and goals. Two key organizations receiving grants are the Maryland Charity Campaign and Kids’ Chance of Maryland, Inc.

Maryland
Charity Campaign
The Maryland Charity Campaign is the United Way campaign for Maryland state agency employees. Since 2000, IWIF employees have contributed more than $300,000 to the MCC. Furthermore, IWIF matches employees’ donations dollar for dollar, making this grant the largest awarded each year.

Grant
Making Fund
Employees may request a grant from IWIF for their charity of choice, up to $250. Priority is given to non-profit 501(c)(3) organizations that support families’ and children’s health and education, safety in the workplace and home, and disaster relief funds. IWIF is proud to support non-profit charities that are important to employees. That’s because we believe what’s important to employees is important to IWIF. Each year the program awards more than 75 grants to charitable organizations throughout Maryland.
Matching
Employee
Donations
In addition to grants, IWIF matches employees’ financial donations up to $250 to charitable organizations– essentially doubling their contributions.

Volunteers
Volunteerism is also a big part of IWIF’s community commitment. IWIF employees receive 12 paid volunteer hours annually to participate in events and programs in the community that include some of the following activities: mentoring children through the Big Brothers Big Sisters ‘Bigs in School’ program; serving food at local outreach centers; working with their child’s school during a PTA event; working on a Boy Scout or Girl Scout project; helping at a children’s summer camp; etc. In the past two years alone dozens of employees have volunteered more than 500 hours in the community.
The giving doesn’t stop there. Each week, employees generously donate food, clothing, and health or school supplies. These items are then donated to area food banks, homeless shelters and neighborhood schools in need. Other activities include blood drives to benefit the American Red Cross, holiday Adopt-a-Family projects, Walk-a-Thons, bake sales and so much more.

Kids’ Chance
of Maryland, Inc.
IWIF is a founding sponsor and key contributor to Kids’ Chance of Maryland, Inc., a non-profit organization that provides educational scholarships to children of catastrophically or fatally injured workers in Maryland. Since the creation of Kids’ Chance in 1996, IWIF and its employees have donated their time, talents and treasures to this worthy cause. Through contributions made by IWIF, its employees and other donors, Kids’ Chance awarded $44,750 in scholarships to 15 deserving college students in 2007.

Leaders in the Community
Many members of IWIF’s executive management team and board of directors serve on local non-profit boards throughout the state. Their leadership skills, vision and influence successfully guide such organizations as: Y of Central Maryland, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Maryland, Baltimore Educational Scholarship Trust, Franciscan Center of Baltimore, and Kids’ Chance of Maryland.
Caring for Marylanders is something IWIF employees are passionate about doing. Our giving spirit permeates through all we do at work and in the community. That’s because being an IWIF employee means making Maryland a better place to live and work.
