IWIF Offers Free Hispanic Workers’ Safety Kit to Employers

(TOWSON, MD) –IWIF, Maryland's largest workers' compensation insurance carrier, is sponsoring Maryland’s Workplace Safety Week June 11 – 17, 2006 and offering Maryland employers in the construction and landscaping trades a free workplace safety kit. This year’s theme—Hispanic worker safety—will focus on making workplace safety a top priority for Maryland business owners and their non-English speaking Hispanic workers.

IWIF chose to focus on Hispanic worker safety after seeing a three-year increase in construction-related workplace injuries and lost time claims among this particular group of injured workers. In addition, IWIF data also show policyholders are employing more Hispanic workers. As a result, policyholders are facing unique challenges such as effectively communicating safety messages to Spanish-speaking workers.

The kit, written in English and Spanish, will be distributed to IWIF’s 2,500 largest policyholders and Maryland’s top independent insurance agents. The free kit will also be available for order in June on IWIF’s web site at www.iwif.com.

Maryland’s Workplace Safety Week was created by IWIF and proclaimed official by the Maryland Governor’s office in 2001.
