MD Man Jailed for Workers’ Comp Fraud Against IWIF

(TOWSON, MD)—A Maryland man was recently sentenced to 12 months in jail with nine months of the sentence suspended and 18 months of supervised probation after he was found guilty in Baltimore County District Court of false workers’ compensation claim and attempted theft against IWIF Workers’ Compensation Insurance.

The defendant, Gregory Simpson, allegedly suffered a whiplash injury while he was in a company work truck. While Simpson was being treated for his contended injury, he collected $1, 605 in temporary total disability benefits from IWIF from June 26, 2005 through August 17, 2005.

IWIF’s Special Investigations Unit began investigating Simpson after the assigned claims adjuster suspected the dates on one of Simpson’s disability slips had been altered, extending his disability orders for an additional two weeks to August 31, 2005. The medical provider treating Simpson at the time confirmed that the dates had been altered and Simpson was released for light duty work on August 18, 2005.

Currently, Simpson is serving his sentence in Baltimore County Detention Center.
