(TOWSON, MD) – IWIF, the state’s largest provider of workers’ compensation insurance, has appointed former Maryland Attorney General J. Joseph Curran, Jr. as an assistant vice president with responsibility for policy and compliance in its claims department. The Towson, MD-based insurer underwrites workers’ compensation insurance for more than 1 out of 4 Maryland employers and records assets and reserves of $1.5 billion.

The appointment, effective the week of June 20, 2007, was announced by Thomas Phelan, president of IWIF. Curran’s appointment follows an advertised search. “ We are enormously pleased to have secured someone with Joseph Curran’s experience, expertise, and skills” Phelan said. “ The processing and payment of claims is a major component of our operations and our expenses. Mr. Curran will help to ensure that IWIF’s claim department continues its high compliance standards with best industry practices. We expect that Curran’s contributions in this and other areas will be significant. ”

Curran’s responsibilities will entail the following:

  • Supervise Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) and minority participation programs in IWIF’s claims department

  • Review, analyzing and ensuring that IWIF’s claims policies and practices are compliant with Maryland law

He was Lieutenant Governor from 1983 to 1986, and before that served in the State Senate and the House of Delegates for nearly a quarter of a century. He also worked in the private practice of law from 1960 through 1982 as an insurance claims trial attorney representing national insurance companies. His first professional job was as a claims adjuster for the Transit Casualty Company.

Curran is a graduate of the University of Baltimore and the University of Baltimore School of Law.

Created by the State of Maryland, IWIF is a fully self-supporting insurance company that operates solely from premium and investment income.
