Former
Maryland Attorney General Joseph Curran Joins IWIF
Will advise on claims
matters for state’s largest workers’ compensation
insurer
(TOWSON, MD) – IWIF, the state’s largest provider of
workers’ compensation insurance, has appointed former Maryland
Attorney General J. Joseph Curran, Jr. as an assistant vice president
with responsibility for policy and compliance in its claims department.
The Towson, MD-based insurer underwrites workers’ compensation
insurance for more than 1 out of 4 Maryland employers and records
assets and reserves of $1.5 billion.
The appointment, effective the week of June 20, 2007, was announced
by Thomas Phelan, president of IWIF. Curran’s appointment
follows an advertised search. “
We are enormously pleased to have secured someone with Joseph Curran’s
experience, expertise, and skills” Phelan said. “ The
processing and payment of claims is a major component of our operations
and our expenses. Mr. Curran will help to ensure that IWIF’s
claim department continues its high compliance standards with best
industry practices. We expect that Curran’s contributions
in this and other areas will be significant. ”
Curran’s responsibilities will entail the following:
Provide legal direction on claims, including consultation on matters
related to fraud and subrogation for recoveries from third parties
Supervise Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) and minority participation
programs in IWIF’s claims department
Review, analyzing and ensuring that IWIF’s claims policies
and practices are compliant with Maryland law
Analyze other state insurance practices and procedures for recommendations
on improving workflow and policies at IWIF
Contribute to the implementation of the State Employees Risk Management
Administration, which seeks to reduce workplace injuries among
state employees; and ensure compliance with state ethics laws
Manage relationships with counties and municipalities who are IWIF
clients
Curran served as Attorney General for Maryland from 1986 to 2007.
He was Lieutenant Governor from 1983 to 1986, and before that served
in the State Senate and the House of Delegates for nearly a quarter
of a century. He also worked in the private practice of law from
1960 through 1982 as an insurance claims trial attorney representing
national insurance companies. His first professional job was as
a claims adjuster for the Transit Casualty Company.
Curran is a graduate of the University of Baltimore and the University
of Baltimore School of Law.
