      Ideas to Promote Safe Driving

Tragically in 2002, more than 600 people lost their lives as a result of motor vehicle accidents in Maryland. Another 38,000 Marylanders were injured in auto accidents, many of them while doing their job or commuting to work. IWIF is asking all of our 30,000 Maryland employers to help promote workplace driving safety. For Maryland's drivers whether, on or off the job, driving a motor vehicle is the most hazardous job we will face each day. From truck driving and pizza delivery to salespeople and daily commuters, workplace driving accidents can involve any type of worker and can adversely affect your bottom line costs of doing business - including your workers' compensation costs. In fact, in 2002, 10% of IWIF's claims costs were paid out for injuries resulting from workplace motor vehicle injuries.

Did you know that approximately 82% of all traffic accidents are due to driver error?
Speeding, not paying attention, following too closely and failing to give right of way are just a few examples of these correctable "driver errors."

Part of educating our policyholders and their employees about the importance of workplace driving safety is to have everyone start paying attention to basic driving safety principles. To help you remind your employees of the importance of paying attention while driving, here are a few ideas and tip sheets for training as well as websites that offer additional resources for improving the safe driving skills of your employees.

Ideas for promoting driving safety in your workplace or to sponsor a Drive Safely Work Week campaign in your workplace

* Obtain and review copies of your employees' MVA driving records.

* Conduct routine maintenance checks on all company vehicles.

* Have an all-employee meeting dealing with driving safety.
Invite a guest speaker. The MVA, SHA, Maryland State Police, Safety Council of Maryland and IWIF all have presenters/speakers available.

* Take advantage of the Safety Council of Maryland's Defensive Driving Course. This 6-hour class is a great way to give your employees valuable refresher training in driving. Face it; the majority of us are way past 16 years of age, which is the last time we took any type of driving instruction.

* Provide driving safety literature and handouts.

* Show a refresher driving safety video.
IWIF's Loss Control services have a list of driving safety videos available for loan to our policyholders. IWIF Video Library Link
